benchwarmers bagels. the B E S T bagel shop in hoenn. like, hands down, fuck you, get out. their steak egg and cheese? to die for. and that's not an exaggeration. because there ain't a whole lot of things out there that would get parker jones to haul ass at the crack of dawn to go to lilycove, from slateport, before the shop opens.

okay, well, she got in last night. had to take care of some dirty work. so her knuckles are freshly bruised and she's only a little stressed. she's had trouble sleeping lately and those early hours of the night have turned to late hours in the morning.

she's running because she's on her morning run, BUT SHE MEANT TO GET UP AN HOUR AGO AND FINISH THIRTY MINUTES BEFORE THEY OPEN BECAUSE THEY WILL RUN OUT OF THE FIRST FRESH BATCH REAL DAMN FAST.

she almost cries when she sees the line outside. her stomach rumbles. sweat soaks the back of her muscle tee. she gets in line. and she stands in line for forty-five damn minutes. and she's only a few away.

they have plenty of bagels left, but the one she's eyeing, the one she's been hankering for is dwindling. the zaatar bagel, with all its crunch and spice, perfect for the juicy steak and melted cheese. she's listening to the orders in front of her. she might actually be in the clear.

fuck yes.

Back when he still lived in Alto Mare, he’d often wake at the ass crack of dawn to the chorus of sibling feet thundering down the stairs so he could shepherd them to school. Then there was the stint where he’d camped around Hoenn, waking to the first slither of tropical sunshine piercing through cheap canvas.

That routine hadn’t changed much when he’d moved in with skyler dross . Daybreak appreciated them often, whether it be as they went about their morning workout routines or as they took their sweet time to greet the new day together, in bed.

This morning was the former. He’d gone for a long job along the Lilycove beachfront, soaking up the refreshing cool air sweeping in from the ocean and listening to the chatter of the bustling community he’d grown fond of.

Its only when his muscles burn and sweat sticks his shirt to his skin, that Angelo allows the scent of the morning trades opening their doors to stall his footfalls.

Benchwarmer bagels. It looks popular, with the queue extending outside the doors but it feels like a decade had passed since he’d last treated himself to a fresh bagel. Fuck it, he thinks as he joins the rest of the baked goods appreciators.

Finally, after forty-five damn minutes with a rapidly gnawing belly, he reaches the front of the line.

“Mornin’.” Angelo oogles the collection of perfectly round and shiny bread products lined before him.

“An asiago,” he points to the cheese slathered bagel. Its doubtful it’ll live up to an authentic Alto Marean batch, but Sky might like to try it. Would be perfect packed with bacon and egg and a generous, extra helping of oozing cheese...

“And I’ll take that last zaatar off your hands.”

sweet arceus, it's happening. it's finally happening. through sleepless nights, she's fantasized about this bagel. hell, half of her had taken the damn job last night just because it was in lilycove. lady luck is on her side because there's only one more person in front of her and -

and the way he says it! he'll take it off his hands. like there's not the World's Biggest Zaatar Bagel Fangirl standing right behind him. heat flashes over her face. she can't say anything. of course she can't say anything.

except she looks at the back of his neck, the shape of him, and something familiar shoots down her spine. something warm and easy and comfortable. how the fuck do i -

"oi, you're the motherfucker that stole my granola bars. ain't no way i'm lettin' you steal my bagel too."

the person behind the counter pauses, zaatar bagel clasped in tongs, and looks past angelo, to parker, with a confused and crumpled expression.

[attr="class","angelomain"]Up it goes from behind the glass counter, his bagel pinched in between metal tongs rising like a delicious, glorious sun. Angelo can already feel saliva pooling beneath his tongue as he watches, cravings tickled after his workout.

In the asiago goes into a brown paper bag, then the zaatar begins its ascension.

Angelo reaches for the running armband squeezing his bicep, tugging his bank card free…

It pauses mid-journey towards the contactless reader, Angelo frozen into place not by the agitated voice spitting at the back of his neck but the strange familiarity of the sound. How it brings to him a spark of happiness.

He knew that voice. Could remember the pinch of the nose it accompanied, how it would ignite a flare of playfulness to bloom in his chest. As if nudging that kind of snappy tone from her had brought him some great, mischievous victory in a past life.

parker jones , something in the back of Angelo’s head tells him as he turns around to face a sweaty, pissed off woman. Her face bringing him nothing short of nostalgia, warm and fiercely loyal…

Piss girl, something more fresh overtakes. Memory of granola bars and traded punches recalled like a poked bruise he forget was still there.

Shooting the person behind the counter a confused look out of the corner of his eye, Angelo gives a very convincing shrug.

“Granola bars? I don’t know what you’re talking about.” He lies.

cerulean lands on hers and a headache unfurls behind her eyes. she blinks and there is sweat in her eyes, almost tears - of laughter and nostalgia. this tide draws at her sinuses, drips down her throat, and by the time she's opened her eyes again, it's gone.

she hacks the loogey up from her throat and then swallows with a grimace. happens sometimes from running. now, back to the matter at hand.

"you little rat," she seethes.

"ma'am."

"i've had a rough couple weeks and that shit right there." cue angry pointing.

"ma'am."

"'s all i've been dreaming 'bout so fuck off and get a blueberry bagel."

"MA'AM."

"what?" it is here and now that she realizes the rest of the store has gone completely silent. even the bagel maker in the bag has poked her head out of the kitchen and is staring curiously out front.

parker's set jaw and angry gaze flickers from rat boy and over to the clerk, who actually seems pretty damn upset right now. (rightfully so, given it's rush hour and one unruly idiot has dropkicked the entire flow of service.) he narrows his eyes at her and goes to lower the tongs.

no. not there. not in the bag. PLEASE.

and then, somehow, something worse happens. whether it's nerves or petty revenge, the tongs slip from his grasp. they skitter onto the ground and the zaatar bagel goes rolling onto, and then off of the counter, and onto the floor. where it lands in a small puddle of condensation from the drink machine.

[attr="class","angelomain"]While Parker spits out her venom, Angelo fights back the twitch that tugs at the corner of his mouth. Resisting a triumphant smile as amusement blooms. Not like any retaliation would be heard over her pity party and an increasingly frustrated (and no doubt underpaid) shop clerk.

It comes to a head with everyone in the shop staring at them, sudden silence deafening. Even some of the queue from outside were gawping through the window.

Angelo doesn’t feel embarrassed in the slightest, giving her post-workout state a glance of acknowledgement and teasing nudge. “Hey, not my problem you got here late. Maybe try an' run your route faster next time.”

As he turns back to the clerk, ready to watch the zaatar bagel be dropped into his bag with a sprinkle of sweet schadenfreude, disaster strikes.

And the worst part of it? Angelo knew he could catch it.

Unfortunately, he couldn’t justify whipping out his powers in the middle of a fucking bagel shop to catch a runaway bread product as it slowly rolled to its demise. No matter how much he wanted it.

Angelo is forced to watch the perfect ring roll right off the counter and into a sweet puddle of irony with a sad splat. Zaatar now glazed with cold floor-coffee. His lips press into a fine, hard line.

“Y’know what, you're right. Blueberry does sound good,” his voice is a note drier after watching his first choice perish.

He didn't even like blueberry, but he'd act like it's the flavour Arceus would shit itself over if it'd piss Parker off.

oh, he is cruisin' for a bruisin', this one. the sound of parker's teeth grinding is almost audible. if someone touched her right now, she might just snap all the way in half with how tense she is. the person behind her has even taken a shy step backwards.

she just keeps on staring at that zaatar, watching that grimy old coffee soak slowly into the bread. forever ruined. and it'll end up in the trash, probably get feasted on by rattata in the dumpster out back. she could go dumpster-diving. fuck, she's had to before.

but no, there will be more zaatar bagels. and she's not going to go scrounging around in the dumpster on account of rat boy.

with the situation under wraps, for the most part, the clerk rings angelo up. to his credit, he tries to hide most of his distaste as parker barks out a frustrated order for an asiago egg and cheese with triple bacon. she orders a cold brew with extra room in it and fills it with nearly a whole miltank's worth of cream and ample sugar on top.

so then there's just waiting, and sipping her coffee, awkwardly to the side, next to rat boy, while their orders get worked on.

[attr="class","angelomain"]Refusing to change his mind on bagel choice, as if doing so was conceding a loss (and fuck would he ever to Piss Girl), Angelo does his best to make his breakfast bearable. A tricky task, given that blueberry was the dogshit option.

In the end, to balance out the sweetness of the dough, he orders it with cured gogoat cheese and a drizzle of combee honey on top. It’s the best he can do with the limited options but hey, he’s unfortunately been subject to Skyler’s cooking. If he could survive that then this would be a breeze.

Speaking of, skyler dross would be the true winner this morning. She’d have scored herself an asiago with egg, cheese and a generous helping of bacon for breakfast; bagel shop drama not included.

Its honestly an upsetting contrast.

With his steaming black coffee in hand, Angelo casually stands off to the side as he waits for his order to be rung up. Parker joins him soon after and the two wait beside one another, their earlier ‘conflict’ bringing with it the promise of an awkward, tense silence.

He takes a sip, and completely breaks it.

“Good choice with the asiago,” Angelo says, just the slightest too smug around the edges to be a compliment. At least, not one for her.

After all he’d ordered the exact same thing. Just he’d ordered his first.

the coffee helps. not by much, but it helps. and if anyone knew parker, they'd know she'd nearly blown her gasket because she's hangry as all hell. food is the way to her heart, through and through, and it makes it worse hearing rat boy's order. he takes the blueberry bagel and slam dunks it with the toppings.

y'got good taste, vestri, said with a cocksure smile and sugared rhubarb still on her tongue. her stomach growls and her head hurts and she smacks her tongue, looks down at her coffee.

the next sip tastes normal again, with milk and sugar.

"i hate you," she mutters in response, but she sounds more confused than anything when she says it. and that only annoys her further. and who or what the hell is 'vestri?'

"vestri? angelo?" wait, did she make that up? did she heart that right? she blinks and looks from the clerk waving a brown paper bag and looking pointedly at angelo, and back to angelo.

"that's your name?" she says incredulously.
